R9 | |||||
The R9 loudspeaker is Regas most advanced speaker to date. Offering a new dynamic four speaker set-up including bi-amping and bass attenuation. These features offer a very versatile sound and great dynamics. Most speakers with a healthy and accurate low frequency output suffer problems in many rooms. Because of the R9's unique low frequency design techniques and the bass attenuation system, it will produce high quality low frequency in most rooms. All the drivers in the R9 have been fully or partially designed by Rega. This has given Rega greater control over the characteristics of each speaker, making use of higher registers, removing Ferrofluid, modifying the doping process and perhaps the biggest change is to their coil characteristics. The new bass driver although looking like a Naos driver, is completely different. It makes use of a new 8-layer voice coil in aluminium instead of copper- the upshot of this, is that it does not require a filter in the crossover and it wieghs about the same as a standard two-layer copper coil. The driver has only been designed to work at frequencies below 800Hz; it's 8-layer voice coil means that it will naturally start to "Roll off" at around 400Hz. One of the more unusual characteristics of the Rega R9 loudspeaker is the bass attenuation. Placing the speaker closer to a wall will increase the bass significantly and likewise, moving them away from a wall will reduce the bass. The attenuation link therefore is to increase or decrease the amount of bass that you want, effectively helping you 'tune' them into your room. It is a very subtle difference, but is extremely effective and if used correctly after experimentation, can really enhance your listening pleasure.
Bi-amping would not be possible, without the newly designed crossover. Because
of the number of drivers in use, the crossover is quite complex. Still, as with
most, if not all, Rega products we have tried to retain our philosophy that 'simplicity'
is usually best! And by utilising the bi-amp system, it will allow you to use
separate power amplifier to drive the tweeters and the bass/mid range, providing
greater separation and control. Cabinet
Design Within the line, Rega has developed a new wool support system using nylon rods. Another important design feature, is the crossover being on the outside of the cabinet. With no internal components other than wires, (which are run down the sides of the cabinet, using our "Quattro" flat cable) there is very little to restrict the flow of air through the cabinet, and less likelyhood of vibration affecting the crossover. |
